Egbemene Community cries out for govt Intervention amid harsh living conditions

Residents of Egbemene, popularly known as Fenegbene, a community in Warri Southwest Local Government Area of Delta State, are pleading for urgent government intervention as they grapple with a severe lack of basic amenities, worsening their daily struggles. Despite its strategic location and economic potential, the community remains underdeveloped, facing challenges such as poor roads, inadequate educational facilities, lack of clean water, and absence of electricity.
A recent investigative visit by PEBNEWS to various struggling communities in Delta State revealed the dire living conditions in Egbemene.
The community's chairman, Mokor Jacob, described the difficulties faced by residents, particularly the impact of seasonal changes on their environment and health.
"We have many challenges in this community. During the dry season, sawdust from nearby activities fills the air, causing eye problems and making it difficult to live here. In the rainy season, the entire community is flooded, making movement nearly impossible," Jacob lamented.
Beyond environmental concerns, Jacob highlighted the lack of economic opportunities, with most residents relying on small-scale businesses such as food vending and baking. "We don’t have major industries or large employers in the community, leaving many people struggling to make ends meet," he added.
Other community members echoed the chairman’s concerns, detailing their daily struggles due to the absence of essential services.
Destiny Johnbull, a resident, spoke on the community's lack of access to clean water, stating that they are forced to rely on a polluted river for bathing and other household needs.
"The river is full of waste, yet we have no choice but to use it. We beg the government to help us by providing clean water and other basic necessities," she pleaded.
Richard Opudu, a former chairman of the community, expressed frustration over the government's inaction, despite multiple pleas for assistance.
"We have written to the NDDC and the state government asking for help, but we have received no response. We have no electricity, and our roads become impassable during the rainy season. We are suffering, and we need urgent government intervention," Opudu stated.
The plight of Egbemene underscores the pressing need for government intervention to improve living conditions in rural communities. Residents are calling on the authorities to address their urgent needs, including:
Provision of essential amenities such as clean water, electricity, and sanitation facilities. Infrastructure development, including roads and bridges to improve accessibility. Establishment of industries to create employment opportunities. Support for small-scale businesses and entrepreneurs to boost the local economy.
The struggles faced by Egbemene residents serve as a stark reminder of the widening gap in rural development, highlighting the urgent need for policies and programs that prioritize the welfare of marginalized communities.
The residents remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that action will be taken to transform their community for the better.
