NIGERIANS ARE UNCERTAIN AS NBS WEBSITE STILL DOWN HOURS TO INFLATION REPORT
Nigerians are still unsure whether to expect inflation report or not as the official website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) can not be accessed on the eve of the report release.
This is as a result of a cyber attack that happened on December 18, 2024.
Reports say, the attack happened shortly after the NBS shared some controversial findings about crime in Nigeria. Their survey showed that Nigerians paid about N2.3 trillion in ransom money over one year.
The NBS is the official statistical office of Nigeria. Among others, the office reports on the country’s inflation rate on the 15th of every month and it has never failed in the timely release of the report via its website www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/ in years.
The statistics agency had gone ahead to warn the public through its official X account to disregard any information on the platform until the situation was resolved.
Many are apprehensive whether they will be able to release their important monthly inflation report as they can't get the economic data needed. This is especially problematic for government officials, business analysts, and investors who need this data to make important decisions.
However, last week Ayo Andrew, head of price statistics at the NBS said the December inflation will be released this month.
He made this known at the sensitisation workshop on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) rebasing organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and the NBS.
