A tragic accident have claimed the life of an unidentified commercial motorcyclist late Tuesday night at Mile 2, inward Cele, Lagos.

The incident involved a Mack truck, registration number EPE-516YA, carrying a 40ft container, and a second truck transporting vehicle engines and motorcycles.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the accident was caused by a mechanical failure—a brake malfunction in the second truck—which led to a collision with an oncoming articulated truck and two motorcycles.

According to Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, distress calls were received via the 767/112 emergency toll-free lines at 11:48 PM, prompting the activation of the state’s Emergency Response Plan.

"Upon arrival at the scene at 12:10 AM, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team found debris from the accident and vehicles blocking the road," Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

Explaining further, Oke-Osanyintolu said: "Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck carrying vehicle engines lost its brakes while in motion, colliding with the Mack truck and the motorcycles. The collision caused the second truck to topple, spilling its cargo of vehicle engines across the highway and obstructing traffic."

"One of the motorcyclists was killed instantly and was transported to the morgue by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials before LASEMA’s team arrived. The other motorcyclist escaped unharmed."

To manage vehicular flow, LASEMA’s team initiated safety and recovery operations to prevent secondary incidents. This included activating traffic diversions, removing the spilled vehicle engines from the road using heavy-duty equipment, and towing the damaged trucks to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yard with a tow truck.
