Oyo town erupts in joy as new Alaafin, Oba Owoade, makes historic arrival
The ancient city of Oyo Town was abuzz with excitement as the people welcomed their new monarch, Oba Abdul Akeem Abimbola Owoade, for the first time since his coronation.
The Oyo State government presented him with the instruments of office on Monday, marking the beginning of a new era for the town.
As Oba Owoade made his way through the streets, residents and dignitaries gathered to catch a glimpse of their new leader. The atmosphere was electric, with traditional drumming, dancing, and colourful displays of Yoruba attire filling the air.
In preparation for the royal arrival, markets, including the historic Akesan Market, were closed as a mark of respect. The Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, explained that this was in line with the customs and traditions of the Oyo people.
"This is a momentous occasion for us, and it's essential to honor our new Oba in line with our cultural practices," she said. Alhaja Bakare and other market women expressed their excitement about welcoming Oba Owoade, who they regard as a symbol of honour and unity in Oyo.
The celebrations, which are expected to continue throughout the week, feature various cultural events designed to honour the new monarch and reinforce community bonds. As the people of Oyo Town look to the future, they do so with hope and optimism, believing that Oba Owoade's reign will bring peace and prosperity to their beloved city.
