The kingmakers of Oyo have rejected the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin, citing a breach of traditional protocols. Governor Seyi Makinde's decision to approve Owoade's appointment has sparked controversy, with the Oyomesi council arguing that the government acted prematurely and disregarded established customs.

According to the Oyomesi, the selection process for the Alaafin is governed by the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which emphasizes the importance of traditional laws and customs. The council claims that the governor's decision undermines their authority and disregards the traditional procedures that have been followed for decades.

The Oyomesi, comprised of principal advisors and sacred officials, possess the authority to appoint the Alaafin. They argue that their role is not merely ceremonial but rather a vital part of the selection process, ensuring that the chosen candidate is the best fit for the position.

The rejection of Owoade's appointment has highlighted the tension between traditional culture and modernity. The Oyomesi council has appealed to the people of Oyo Kingdom to remain calm, assuring them that they intend to challenge the governor's decision in court.

In a letter to the governor, the Oyomesi council stated that they had previously recommended Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the next Alaafin, but the governor refused to approve their choice. The council emphasized that Owoade's appointment was not in compliance with the traditional laws and customs of the kingdom.
