KING MAKERS REJECT NEW ALAAFIN OF OYO
The Kingmakers in Oyo have rejected the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin by Governor Seyi Makinde.
This was disclosed in a live broadcast programme "The Morning Show" on Arise News.
This rejection is as a result of skipping the due process. There are strict processes that have been followed for years now for the selection. The Oyomesi council who are council of chiefs and kingmakers with Bashorun as their head.
As it stands, the present situation in Oyo is that of conflict between traditional culture and modernity.
The Oyomesi said the government acted ahead of them because they are relying solely on the chieftaincy law of 1967 as a guide, but the decision of the governor is against their traditional laws that have been respected for decades.
The Oyomesi who are principal advisors and sacred officials who also served a variety of judicial and administrative functions have the authority to appoint the Alaafin as they are familiar with their transitions and can choose the best fit for the position. The decision of the Governor is highly frowned at as it is an infringement on their tradition.
Meanwhile, the Alaafin is not chosen by consultation or divination but through strict compliance with the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which governs the selection process.
