Tragedy in Ibadan: Truck crash at Eleyele Market, claims life, leaves several injured
In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a truck experiencing brake failure crashed into the bustling Eleyele Market in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, killing a middle-aged woman and leaving several others injured.
The ill-fated DAF truck, loaded with granite, reportedly lost control while descending from the Dugbe end toward the market. Eyewitnesses revealed that the driver struggled to stop the vehicle but was unsuccessful due to a brake malfunction, causing the truck to ram into the crowded market.
The deceased woman, whose identity remains unknown, was struck down in the chaos. Meanwhile, several injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving medical attention.
Speaking on the incident, Olanrewaju Qazeem, Chairman of the Sango/Eleyele Motor Park, and Chief Mrs. Ramota Aare Ajobiare, the Iyaloja of Eleyele Market, confirmed the accident. They disclosed that the crash occurred in the early hours of the day, leaving the community in shock.
“Our hearts are heavy,” said Chief Ajobiare. “We lost one of our own, and several others are currently hospitalized. This is a devastating day for us.”
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause and ensure measures are put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Residents and traders have called for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance regulations and improved safety measures around high-traffic areas like Eleyele Market.
