Lebanon Elects New President: Army Chief Joseph Aoun Takes Office

In a significant development, Lebanon's lawmakers have elected army chief Joseph Aoun as the country's new president, filling a two-year vacancy. 

Aoun, who turns 61 on Friday, secured 99 votes out of 128 in the parliamentary session, marking a crucial step towards stabilizing the war-torn country.

Aoun's inauguration ceremony took place inside parliament, where he swore his oath amidst general applause. The newly elected president wore a dark suit and bright blue tie, deviating from his usual military uniform. 

In his address to the chamber, Aoun stated, "A new phase in the history of Lebanon begins today."

Supporters of Aoun celebrated his victory in his home village of Aishiyeh in south Lebanon. The village was adorned with Lebanese flags and Aoun's portrait, reflecting the excitement and optimism surrounding his election.

Aoun's presidency comes with significant challenges, including overseeing a ceasefire on the Israeli border and appointing a prime minister to lead reforms demanded by international creditors. 

Lebanon has been grappling with its worst economic crisis in history, and Aoun's leadership will be crucial in navigating the country's financial recovery.

The election process was not without controversy, as lawmakers from the pro-Hezbollah bloc voted blank in the first round, citing objections to foreign interference. 

However, Aoun's eventual victory has been seen as a positive step towards stability in Lebanon.

As Aoun begins his presidency, he will need to address the country's pressing issues, including the economic crisis and the ceasefire on the Israeli border. With international pressure mounting, Aoun's leadership will be closely watched in the coming months.
