Delta CP summons Police Officers over escape of arrested suspects in Ovwian police station
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda has summoned the Divisional Police Officer, Ovwian Aladja Division, CSP, Bulus Musa and his team following a petition from Aladja Community in Udu Local Government area of Delta State to the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun over escape of two notorious criminals from cell.
A Senior Police Officer at the State Command who craved anonymity revealed this to our correspondent on Sunday.
The Officer said, "The action CP has summoned the DPO and those on duty for investigation. It is a sabotage from some bad eggs in the system because the DPO had already informed the CP of the arrested criminals.
"CP is very angry and wants to ensure that no stone is left unturned to unravel the escape of the criminals and he has ordered their immediate re-arrest." He said.
The Community in a petition requested that the Delta State Commissioner of Police investigate and take decisive action against the DPO and his team over the escape of Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi.
According to the petition, the suspects were known for terrorizing Aladja community and its environs before their arrest by the Aladja Security Crack Team (ASCT) on 31st December 2024, following an increase in criminal activities in the area.
PEBNEWS gathered that the ASCT apprehended four suspects, including Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers), Debi, Kelvin Dukuye, and Philip Faka, along with ammunitions, and handed them over to the DPO of Ovwian/Aladja Police Station on December 31, 2024.
The handover of the suspects was facilitated by Hon. Andrew Ekwetafia Gbise JP, Secretary of Udu Local Government Council, following the suspects making confessional statements in video and audio.
According to reports, the Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun (Hon.) Vincent Oyibode had earlier informed the DPO of the arrests, before the suspects were transferred to police custody. The DPO delegated the case to DCO 1 for handling.
The Community said, "In a shocking development on Saturday, January 4, 2025, officers from the Ovwian/Aladja Police Station, including DCO 1 Inspector Queen and DCO 4 and others visited the Aladja Community to inform them that two of the suspects, Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi, had escaped detention.
"Aladja Community Council expressed outrage over the escape, alleging foul play and negligence on the part of the police officers. We emphasized that the two escaped suspects are among the most dangerous criminals in the area and called for their immediate re-arrest." The petition stated.
The community urged the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to hold the DPO and his team accountable for the escape and ensure that the suspects are brought to justice.
This incident has further heightened concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing security challenges in Aladja and its surrounding areas. The community has demanded swift action to restore public trust and prevent further criminal activities.
