17th Amasuo-Ugeh Festival kicks off with Tompolo Peace and Unity Cup
The 17th annual Amasuo-Ugeh Festival got underway in Kokodiagbene community, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, with the Tompolo Peace and Unity Cup competition.
Organized by the Planning Committee of the Amasuo-Ugeh Festival 2024, the football tournament aims to foster peace and unity among communities in the kingdom. The competition is part of a series of activities lined up to commemorate the year-end festival.
The grand opening match took place on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Ebiabu Primary School field, with Kokodiagbene FC facing off against Benikrukru FC. Benikrukru FC emerged victorious with a 2-1 win.
The competition will continue with subsequent matches scheduled for December 17, 19, and 21. The winner will receive a cash prize of N200,000, while the first, second, and third runners-up will receive N150,000, N100,000, and N50,000, respectively.
Chief George Timiyan, Planning Committee Chairman, declared the competition open and emphasized the importance of unity and peace among communities. He urged participants to abide by the rules and officials to maintain transparency.
Chief Timiyan also stressed the need for collaboration to attract meaningful development to the various communities in the kingdom. "What we need is collaboration to bring development to our communities," he said.
The opening ceremony featured a dance performance by the Fire Dancers cultural troupe, which impressed the spectators.
Youth leaders, including Comr. Laide Blessing, Youth President of Kokodiagbene, and Mr. Solomon Akoto, Chairman Local Organising Committee (LOC), commended the organizers for promoting youth participation in community affairs.
The Tompolo Peace and Unity Cup competition is expected to continue until December 21, with the final match determining the winner of the coveted trophy.
