Breaking - ₦5million: Jubilation as Corner Lord's wins 2nd edition of Ofugara peace,unity cup competition in Delta ...as Tompolo, Ejumudo preach peace
There was wild jubilation at Ogbe Primary School in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State as Corner Lord's of Uvwie has won the 2nd edition of the Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup just as they coasted home with five million naira prize after being decorated with their medals.
Corner Lord's at a final match defeated their counterpart, Uvwie All Stars in a penalty shootout after a ninety minutes of play.
In what seemed like a shock, Corner Lord's goal keeper caught one of the penalties of Uvwie All Stars and that gave them the victory.
The first runner up of the competition, Uvwie All Stars also went home with the sum of three million naira(₦3m) prize in sadness as they blamed their player who lost a penalty.
Meanwhile, High Chief (Dr.) Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo Alias Tompolo urged Deltans to live in peace and harmony.
Tompolo who was represented by the Executive Director (Operations&Technical) of TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited, Capt. Wariedi Enisuoh in a chat with newsmen stressed, "You can't achieve anything without peace. You cannot achieve anything without togetherness.
While noting that sports is probably the second language to music which everyone speaks,Tompolo whose firm was major sponsor of the event said, "The 2nd edition of the Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup which brings everybody together should also be our source of progress as a whole".
The National Secretary of Human Rights Protection Congress HRPC, Nigeria, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo commended the organisers of the competition for preaching peace amongst Deltans and Nigerians in general.
According to him, "First l must applaud the organisers Mr. Ofugara for the audacious occasion harnessing potentials together using football as a panacea for peace."
Comrade Ejumudo noted that sports is a generally acceptable language for peace and conviviality of bringing minds together as well as giving out a message.
"The message is all about live and we as Deltans, we must learn how to love one and because we don't have another State outside the State that we have.
"So, it's a good one. A very good play of football here and the ambience, personalities all across different nationalities are here together in one canopy, in one friendship, one conviviality, mutual respect for one another.
"I saw the Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, the Ataneru. He was also here. High Chief Kestin Pondi and a host of the dignitaries. I must say it's an amazing one. I wonder what the 3rd edition will be like if we have the kind of mammoth crowd in the second edition. It's a good one. I think in all, the more we please the peace, the less we please the war. War is not good. Crisis is not good but with peace, we will achieve more and that's we stand for. Even as human right activists, as keep preaching peace and oneness amongst all Deltans, amongst Nigerians irrespective of your political affiliation, your creed and your race."
Comrade Ejumudo also urged the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led Delta State Government to bring more leadership centres to give Uvwie indigenes especially the youths free access to education to enable them broaden their knowledge and expertise in various fields.
Earlier, a member of the Board of Trustees of Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup, Barr.(Mrs ) Antoinette Ofugara Obiuwevbi welcomed guests to the event as they gather to celebrate the spirit of unity and peace which according to her, defines their community.
Mrs. Obiuwevbi said:, "As we say, a home is only a home because of the people in it. When our siblings are scattered, can we truly boast of our home? This profound truth resonates deeply within us,reminding us that our strength lies not in our individual accomplishments, but in our collective bonds.
"The Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup is more that just a tournament ; it's a testament to our unwavering commitment to togetherness.
"Beyond excitement and glamour, our hearts swell with joy seeing brothers put aside differences and showcase sportsmanship. This event embodies our resolve to foster harmony, understanding and mutual respect. As football unites today, let us extend this bond beyond the fields. Solomon Ighrakpata, Chairman of Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, DBIR, High Chief Kestin Pondi, Managing Director of TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited, the Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom,HRM. Emmanuel Emakpor, the Ataneru and others.
