34 -year old woman delivers quadruplets in Delta, calls for financial assistance to offset medical bills
A thirty-four(34) year-old woman, Mrs. Victory Okpako has been delivered of a set of quadruplets in Warri, Delta State.
The woman who had earlier had a nine-year-old boy, had the delivery at Shepherd Hospital and Fertility Centre, a private hospital in Edjeba Community on October 1, Nigeria's Independence celebration day. The four babies are doing well and are in the incubator at the hospital, PebNews can report.
Mrs. Okpako expressed fears that the medical bill to discharge herself and the four babies will be too bogus for them to pay.
She pointed out that her husband, a businessman, is on the streets struggling to raise money but hasn't gotten a dime.
She said although, they've not been given the total bill but they spend at least two hundred thousand (₦200,000) on daily basis to take care of the children aside the original bill that will come.
Mrs. Okpako who, although, expressed happiness for the delivery it is now the money to take care of them is what they are looking for.
Mrs. Okpako who owns a patent medicine shop where she also sells cosmetics appealed to the Delta State Government, Non-Governmental Organisations and the general public for financial assistance to cater for the children.
"Anybody, government and Non-Governmental Organisations can help me. They should please, do because I need these children. I don't want them to to starve. I have suffered for them. They should raise money for me to care for them.
Giving background of her marriage and child's delivery, Mrs. Okpako, noted that she got married in 2014 and had her first child, a boy in 2015, adding that her attempt to have her second child didn't work out as the child died.
According to her, it was later discovered by a doctor that she had complications. She said, the doctor said her womb will be removed but she insisted that God Almighty will help her saying since then, she hasn't been able to conceive. She said she has been managing herself until last year(2023)when she became pregnant.
Mrs. Okpako said after the first scan was done on the pregnancy, the doctor told her she will not make it due to the complications with a stern warning not to endanger her life.
According to her, it was when she arrived Shepherd Hospital Fertility Centre, the former doctor met her with pregnancy in the theatre, she made a passionate appeal that she should be given special attention. According to her, going by the circumstances surrounding the birth of these babies, they are miracle babies.
At the time of filing this report, Mrs. Okpako is still in tears over how the children will be discharged from the hospital.
An Obstetrician Gynaecologist at Shepherd Hospital and Fertility Centre, Dr. Okpara LoveDay said the operation performed on Mrs. Okpako was successful. While noting that the hospital which is a fertility centre, deals on IVF matters. Dr. Okpara said the operation was done by a team of medical doctors including two nurses to ensure they had a successful outcome the babies.
According to him, people come to the hospital from abroad for medical attention adding that they're succeeding because they update their knowledge which enable them do things properly.
While noting that the sum of fifty thousand (₦50,000) is spent in each of the babies daily, Dr. Okpara said it's expensive.
"She's not wrong in her calculation,what she's asking for and I hope people would come to her aid.
"The babies have not gained the appropriate weight for us to discharge them and she's still recovering",he said
Dr. Okpako however, said they will be discharged within the next three to four weeks and there's high survival rate. "We have high hopes they're going to make it", he added.
At the time of this report, husband to the woman, Mr. Moses Okpako is nowhere to be found and his mobile phone line has not been reachable.
