FG proposes fifty percent increase in feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria
The Federal Government has consented to fifty percent increase in feeding allowances for inmates in correctional centre across the country.
Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service disclosed this during the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee in a press briefing held in Abuja.
The approval is in response to rising inflation and growing concerns over the welfare of inmates nationwide.
The plan comes as a viral video showed inmates at a correctional centre in Calabar, Cross River State, complaining about poor feeding conditions.
Abubakar said that this was the first phase of the Government’s efforts to address the impact of inflation on food prices.
Abubakar however explained that the viral video does not reflect the true state of the Nigeria Correctional Service in the country or its mission to reform and rehabilitate inmates", he explained.
The spokesperson stated that a thorough investigation of the incident, is ongoing and the Government is committed to improving the welfare of inmates as the 50% rise in feeding allowances is the start of the review to mitigate the high cost of food.
