Gov. Alia approves 6 months tenure extension for 23 LG Caretaker Chairmen
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has extended the tenure of the 23 Local Government Caretaker Chairmen in the state by six months.
The tenure of the current Caretaker Chairmen was expected to come to an end on June 5, 2024.
The decision to elongate the tenure of the Caretaker Chairmen was conveyed to the Benue State House of Assembly through a correspondence by the Governor read on the floor of the House on Tuesday by the Speaker, Mr. Hyacinth Dajoh.
The approval of the Governor's request was contained in a statement issued Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Terver Zamber.
Part of the statement reads: "The Benue State House of Assembly has approved the extension of the tenure of Caretaker Committees of the Local Government Councils in the State for a period of six months."
The statement indicated that the approval was sequel to a letter from the Governor read at plenary by the Speaker requesting the tenure extension .
According to him, the letter indicated that the tenure of the current Caretaker Chairmen is scheduled to expire on the 5th of June, 2024 and the extension of the tenure of the Caretaker Chairmen will avail the State Independent Electoral Commission BESIEC enough time to prepare and conduct the Local Government Council elections. While some of the Chairmen enjoyed tenure extension, others were replaced.
Accordingly, those nominated for Council Chairmanship's positions in the 23 Local Government Areas are, Dennis Guda for Vandeikya, Philip Achuah for Konshisha, Chief Timothy Hembaor, Ushongo, Justine Shaku Justine for Katshina, Neji Terhile for Kwande and Avar Verlumun for Gboko Local Government Areas.
Others include: Roy Ashirga, Tarkaa , Cephas Agber, Buruku, James Dwem, Makurdi, Mrs Comfort Agbo, Gwer East , Henry Agba, Gwer West, Simon Unongo, Guma, Victor Iorzaa, Ukum, Benjamin Uzenda, Logo and Mrs. Gloria Ogebe, Ado Local Government Areas.
Also nominated for confirmation are: Philip Ebenyaku, Agatu Local Government Area, Ochai Alidu, Apa, Adokpe Onum, Obi, Emmanuel Aba, Ogbadibo, Fred Adugbo, Ohimini, Dr. Wilson Eche, Otukpo, Onyilo Omale, Okpokwu and Ire Arubi for Oju Local Government Areas.
The House advised the nominees to immediately submit their Curriculum Vitae to the Assembly on or before Thursday June 6, 2024 for screening and confirmation.
