Breaking: Many Feared Dead as 2-Storey Building Collapses in Abuja
Dozens of occupants of a two-story building have been feared dead after its collapse on Wednesday night.PEBNEWS reports that the building situated along Lagos Street in Garki, Abuja collapsed around 11pm.The occupants of the building that was trapped or dead are yet to be ascertained.According to an eyewitness, the building housed many apartments, including shops and offices.In his words; “There was wailing all over the place after the building collapsed. Dozens of people are either dead or trapped as the building is fully occupied.“It was a scene of helplessness with people screaming and going helter-skelter, while the heavy rain continues,” he said.However, Director-General of Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, Dr. Abbass Iddriss who confirmed the incident, said 37 people have been rescued at the scene of the collapsed building, out of which two are fatally injured.Dr. Iddriss also said that the affected persons have been evacuated to various hospitals for medical treatment.“37 persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped.“Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations are on ground but slow due to ongoing rain.“They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble,” he stated.Speaking further, Iddriss revealed that rescue mission continues while they await the arrival of equipment to enhance the operations.
